Double hung windows casement window types
The double-hung window is perhaps the most famous kind of windows. It consists of upper and lower wings, which slide vertically in separate grooves in the side posts or full width metal weatherstripping (see drawing). This type of window has a maximum face opening for ventilation of the half of the total window area. Each wing is equipped with springs, balances or compression weatherstripping, keep it in at any position. Compression weatherstripping for example, prevents the penetration of air, offers excitement and acts as a counterweight, and several types allow the sash for easy painting or repair will be removed.
The posts (side and top of the frame) are of nominal 1-inch wood produced, the width has to be used with gypsum board or plaster interior. Sills are made of nominal 2-inch wood and about 3 inclined at 12 for good drainage (Figure D). Sash may be divided into a series of lights by small wood members called rungs. A ranch-house type can divide the best performance with upper and lower wings in two horizontal light. A colonial or Cape Cod house usually has divided each leaf into six or eight lights. Some manufacturers provide pre-assembled parts which can engage with a single light, the division into six or eight lights. This simplifies the painting and other maintenance.
Mounted frames shall be made in the rough opening on strip of paper around the building perimeter to minimize air infiltration placed. The frame is sealed and nailed to side bolts and head through the bowels of the blind or stopped on the sides. Where nails are exposed, as on the envelope, the corrosion-resistant type.
Hardware for double hung windows includes lifts the wings that are attached to the bottom rail, although sometimes by a finger groove in the track are removed.
